There are few places in Europe where you can watch one of the world's great New Year's fireworks displays in a light jacket. Funchal is one of them. Here is everything I tell my guests about spending Christmas and New Year on Madeira — and what to book before it's too late.
Why Madeira for Christmas and New Year?
From the start of December until early January, Funchal turns into one big celebration. The whole city is lit up, there are Christmas markets and live music along the seafront, and on the night of 31 December the bay hosts one of the most famous New Year's fireworks displays in the world — the one that set a Guinness World Record in 2006.
And all of this happens at around 19–20°C in the day. You can walk the seafront without a coat in the afternoon and watch the fireworks in a light jacket.
Book early: New Year is the busiest week of the whole winter. Hotels with a view of the bay, restaurants with a New Year's Eve dinner and boat trips for the fireworks sell out months in advance. If you are reading this in October or November — book now.

What to Do in Madeira over the Holidays
The New Year's Eve Fireworks over Funchal
At midnight, fireworks are launched from dozens of points all around the amphitheatre of Funchal at once, so the whole bay lights up. Cruise ships anchor in the harbour and sound their horns at midnight.
Where to watch: the seafront (Avenida do Mar) is the classic spot but very crowded — arrive well before 11 pm. Higher viewpoints above the city give you the full panorama. A hotel room or restaurant with a bay view is the most comfortable option if you booked in time.
Christmas Lights and Markets in Funchal
The lights usually switch on at the start of December and stay until early January. The centre — Avenida Arriaga, the cathedral square and the seafront — fills with stalls, nativity scenes and evening concerts. Walk it after dark; it's free and magical.
Missa do Parto and the Market Night
In the days before Christmas, parishes hold the early-morning Missa do Parto, followed by a gathering with music, coffee and traditional snacks outside the church. Around 23 December, Funchal's Mercado dos Lavradores stays open late into the night — the famous "Noite do Mercado", one of the liveliest evenings of the year.
A New Year's Day Out of the City
After a late night, 1 January is perfect for a slow day: the north coast and its natural pools at Porto Moniz, the laurel forest at Fanal, or an easy levada with a view like Balcões. Most of the island is quiet while Funchal sleeps.
Holiday Food to Try
Bolo de mel (Madeiran honey cake, traditionally baked for Christmas), carne de vinha d'alhos (pork in wine and garlic) and a glass of Madeira wine or poncha. Local bakeries sell bolo de mel all year, but at Christmas every family has its own.
Practical Tips for New Year in Madeira
- Transport on 31 December: the centre of Funchal is closed to traffic for many hours and parking is almost impossible. Plan how you will get in and — more importantly — back out after midnight.
- Dinner: most restaurants run a special New Year's Eve menu and need booking well in advance.
- Prices: accommodation for 28 December – 2 January is the most expensive of the winter. Staying a little outside the centre and arranging transport is often better value.
- Pack: a light jacket for the evening, comfortable shoes for steep cobbled streets, and a warm layer if you go up into the mountains.
